I Didn't Choose Pre-Medical – Now I Have Suicidal Thoughts

Answered 27 September 2026 at 12:46 pm PKT

If you feel your life is ruined because you didn't choose pre-medical, you are not alone. This page helps you understand these intense feelings and explore your options, including the possibility of a gap year, while addressing suicidal thoughts.

I feel like that I have ruined my life by not choosing pre medical it was the only purpose of my life to be a doctor and now I can't be one . The only way i can be one is by taking a gap year .i think of suicidal thoughts

It is not too late to become a doctor, and a gap year is not a sign of failure — it is a real, common path that many students take. The thought that you have ruined your whole life because of one subject choice is the depression talking, not the truth. But the suicidal thoughts are serious: they mean the pain has become unbearable, and you need to be safe right now. Please promise yourself you will stay alive long enough to talk to someone who can help — a parent, a trusted teacher, a friend, or even Zara here. You do not have to figure this out alone.

The gap year is not a loss

Taking a year to reapply for pre-medical is not a punishment. In Pakistan, many students repeat FSc or take a gap after A-levels to improve their merit. A doctor who starts a year later is still a doctor. The real loss would be if you gave up on yourself now. If becoming a doctor is truly the goal, then one extra year is a small price for a lifetime of that work. You have not closed any doors.

What to do about the suicidal thoughts

  • Do not be alone right now. Go sit with someone in your family, even if you cannot talk about it. Just being near another person can keep you safe.
  • Tell one adult the exact words: "I am having thoughts of suicide because I think I've ruined my life." Say it plainly. They may not know how to react, but they will know to take it seriously.
  • If you cannot tell anyone yet, call a crisis helpline. (You can find numbers on our /get-help page.) Even if you just say "I need someone to talk to," that call can be the thing that gets you through the night.
  • Write down one thing you still want to do in this life — not about medicine, something small like eating your favourite dish or watching a show. Hold on to that.

You are more than one exam

Right now it feels like being a doctor was the only purpose of your life. But you are still very young. Many people change their minds, take detours, or discover new paths along the way. Even if this gap year works out and you become a doctor, there will be other setbacks — that is what life is. The real skill is learning how to survive them without losing hope in yourself.

Do one thing now: Step away from the place where you are thinking this way. Go drink a glass of water. Splash your face. Then tell one person. Zara is here to talk whenever you need, but please also reach out to someone in your real life tonight.
