Stress and burnout — when the tank runs empty

Stress is a normal part of life. Burnout is what happens when stress never stops. Here is the difference, and how to come back.

Stress vs burnout

Stress feels like too much — too many demands, too little time. You feel tense, rushed, overwhelmed. Burnout feels like too little — emptiness, numbness, a sense that nothing matters anymore. Burnout usually arrives after months of chronic stress with no real recovery. The danger is that burnout does not feel urgent — it creeps in quietly.

Signs you may be burning out

Exhaustion that sleep does not fix · cynicism about work or relationships · feeling ineffective or pointless · physical symptoms with no clear medical cause (headaches, stomach issues) · withdrawing from people you care about · struggling to feel anything. If several of these feel familiar, your body is asking for something to change.

What recovery actually looks like

Recovery from burnout is not a week off. It requires real rest, a reduction in demands where possible, and rebuilding things that feed you — connection, purpose, gentle movement, time in nature. It is slow. That is normal. Be patient with yourself in the way you would be patient with a friend.

When to ask for help

If burnout has lasted more than a few weeks, or if it has shifted into depression — persistent low mood, loss of interest, dark thoughts — please speak to someone. A GP, a counsellor, or our team are all places to start. You do not have to earn rest.

You don't have to carry this alone
