What is therapy — and what actually happens in a session

Many people want help but worry about what therapy involves. Here is an honest, simple explanation with no jargon.

Therapy is a conversation with a purpose

A therapist is a trained professional who helps you explore thoughts, feelings, and patterns that might be keeping you stuck or in pain. Unlike talking to a friend, a therapist is neutral, trained, bound by confidentiality, and focused entirely on you. There is no judgement, and you set the pace.

What happens in the first session

The first session is usually an assessment — the therapist asks about what has brought you in, your history, and what you are hoping for. You do not have to share everything at once. You will both decide whether you want to continue working together. It is normal to feel nervous. It is also normal to feel relieved.

Different types of therapy

CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) works with the link between thoughts, feelings, and behaviour — very well-evidenced for depression and anxiety. Counselling focuses more on listening and emotional processing. Psychotherapy goes deeper into patterns formed over time. There is no single right type — your therapist will guide you toward what fits.

Is it available in Pakistan
