Anxious Attachment in a First Relationship: What to Do

Answered 18 September 2026 at 8:24 pm PKT

A first relationship can bring up intense fears of rejection, abandonment, and losing yourself. This page explains anxious attachment, ways to regain calm and communicate, and when to seek support in Pakistan.

I have serious anxious attachment issues and it's running my peace. I'm 20 and js got into a first relationship. What do i do. I'm loosing my mind

It is genuinely hard to feel like your own mind is working against you, especially when something good like a first relationship finally happens. What you are describing — the fear of losing them, the need for constant reassurance, the feeling that one small thing means everything is over — is a real pattern, and it can exhaust you completely. But here is the thing: this pattern did not start with this relationship. It started earlier, and your relationship is just the place where it shows up most painfully now. That means the work is not about fixing the relationship; it is about calming the part of you that keeps sounding the alarm.

What is actually happening

Your brain is treating uncertainty as danger. When you do not hear back quickly, or when things feel a little distant, your attachment system goes into overdrive and tells you that you are about to be abandoned. That feeling is real, but it is not a fact. The relationship itself may be fine — your mind is just running a script from earlier experiences. Recognizing that difference is the first step.

What you can do right now

  • Pause before you react. When the panic hits, do not text them or check their location. Wait ten minutes. The urge will fade enough for you to think.
  • Write down the story you are telling yourself. "They are ignoring me" or "They do not care." Then write one other possible explanation — they are busy, tired, or just not on their phone. Both are possible. Hold both.
  • Tell them what you need, not what you fear. Say "I feel anxious sometimes and it helps me when we check in once during the day" instead of "You never talk to me." That is a request, not an accusation.
  • Build something that is yours alone. A hobby, a walk, a show you watch without them. When your whole sense of safety sits on one person, any small thing feels like the end of the world. Give yourself another anchor.

The single most important thing is to stop treating your anxiety as proof that something is wrong. Anxiety is a feeling, not a prediction. You can feel scared and still be safe. That is hard to believe right now, but it is true.

This will not fix overnight. But every time you choose not to act on the panic, you teach your brain that you can survive uncertainty. You are not broken for feeling this way — you are just learning a skill that no one taught you earlier. Keep going. Zara is here to talk whenever you need to untangle the thoughts.
