Coping With Depression When an Illness Has No Known Cure

Answered 14 September 2026 at 6:14 am PKT

A serious or incurable illness can bring depression, excessive sleep, poor appetite, and low energy that make you feel unlike yourself. This page explores practical coping steps, support options in Pakistan, and ways to keep prayer and worship part of your care.

How can I cope with depression, sleeping too much, low appetite, and low energy when I have an illness with no known cure? I feel like I’m losing myself, but prayer and worship still give me strength.

Even when an illness has no known cure, the depression, sleep changes, poor appetite and exhaustion around it can often be eased. You are not losing yourself or failing spiritually; you are carrying a heavy strain for a long time. Prayer giving you strength is a real resource, and it can sit alongside medical and emotional support.

Start with a medical review

Tell your treating doctor exactly what has changed: how much you sleep, what and how much you eat, your energy, mood, pain and any recent medicine changes. Ask whether depression, anaemia or another deficiency, thyroid problems, poor sleep, or treatment side effects could be contributing. This is not about blaming your mind; it is about finding anything that can be treated.

Make the day smaller

Aim for stability, not a full productive day
