Depression Waves: How to Cope When You Feel Exhausted

Answered 21 September 2026 at 11:45 pm PKT

Learn how to manage waves of depression when eating, talking and self-care feel impossible. This page also covers guilt, feeling like a burden and asking for support safely.

Depression keeps coming in waves, and I feel too exhausted to eat, talk, or look after myself. How can I get through it without feeling like a burden or guilty for needing support?

Depression can make even eating, speaking, and washing feel too heavy. You are not a burden; you are struggling and need support. For this wave, forget having a normal day—focus on getting through the next ten minutes.

Make the next step tiny

Do one thing only: drink some water, eat a few bites of something easy, or wash your face. Then rest without judging how little you managed. When you have a little more energy, choose the next small task.

Ask without explaining everything

Send one clear message: “I’m having a difficult wave and need someone to check on me. Can you sit with me or help me get some food?” You do not need to apologise or prove that things are bad enough.

Guilt is not the truth

Depression often turns needing care into “I am troublesome” or “I should cope alone.” That thought is not proof that you are failing. Accepting help today does not stop you from supporting others another day.

If you cannot drink, feel faint or confused, or cannot keep yourself safe, get urgent medical help and ask someone to stay with you. Otherwise, take this one tiny step at a time; you deserve care even when you have no energy to earn it.
