How to Detach from Someone Who Doesn't Want You

Answered 19 October 2026 at 5:30 pm PKT

If you're caught in one-sided love and can't stop imagining a future that may never happen, you're not alone. This page offers practical steps to let go and where to find free online support in Pakistan.

I want to detach from someone who doesn't want me

I'm stuck in a one-sided attachment, imagining conversations and a future with him. I want to feel emotionally okay again and learn to detach. I need free online support because I can't attend sessions in person.

I hear you. What you are describing is a very common and very painful place to be. The constant thinking and imaginary conversations are your mind's way of trying to find comfort and safety, and it makes complete sense that you would turn to them. But when that comfort becomes a cage, it is genuinely exhausting.

The first thing to understand is that you are not broken for feeling this way. Attachment is a deep human instinct, and when someone becomes the centre of your inner world, it takes time and gentle effort to shift that focus back to yourself. You are already taking the first step by naming it and asking for help.

What is happening in your mind

Those imagined conversations and future scenarios are a form of emotional rehearsal. Your brain is practising a relationship that does not exist, and each time you replay it, you strengthen the attachment. This is not a weakness — it is just how the mind works. The goal is not to shame yourself for doing it, but to gently redirect that energy.

  • Notice when you start imagining, and say to yourself: "This is a thought, not a reality."
  • Give the thought a name, like "the story", so you can separate yourself from it.
  • Remind yourself that the comfort is real, but the situation is not changing.

Small steps to detach

Detachment does not happen overnight, and it does not mean you have to stop caring. It means you slowly stop letting this person run your inner world.

  • Start a short "worry window" — allow yourself ten minutes a day to think about him, then close it and get up.
  • Write down the imagined conversations instead of replaying them in your head. Putting them on paper often makes them feel less powerful.
  • When you catch yourself imagining a future, ask: "What would I be doing right now if I were not thinking about him?" Then do one small thing from that answer.
