How to Move On After a Loved One Hurt You and Apologized

Answered 2 November 2026 at 11:40 pm PKT

When someone you love hurts you and then apologises and changes, the pain can still linger. This page explains why it keeps coming back and how to process it so it no longer controls you.

How can i move on when someone whom i love very deeply did something to hurt me in the past ? But they have apologized and rectified that situation and made changes. Yet it is smth that still comes back to me. I can’t process it and move on. How do i process it and keep it from holding so much power over me?

It is genuinely hard when a hurt stays with you even after someone has apologised and changed. You are not failing — the mind takes time to catch up with the facts, and that is normal.

Part of what makes this so stubborn is that the hurt happened inside a relationship you trusted. Your brain learned a lesson — "this person can hurt me" — and it does not unlearn that just because the behaviour stopped. That is not a flaw; it is how survival works.

Do one thing — sit with the memory when it comes, without trying to push it away. Say to yourself, "This is an old hurt. It happened then, and I am safe now." That sounds simple, but it helps the brain separate the past from the present.

Another thing that often helps is to tell the person, once, how the memory still affects you. Not to accuse, but to share. Sometimes saying it out loud to the one person who needs to hear it drains some of the power out of it.

And be kind to yourself. You are not supposed to be over it by a certain date. The fact that it still comes back does not mean you are stuck — it means you loved deeply, and that kind of love takes time to heal.
