Psychotic Depression Relapse in Teenagers: What to Do

Answered 14 September 2026 at 8:42 am PKT

As a teenager diagnosed with psychotic depression several years ago, I have another attack but

A return of psychotic depression can happen, but you should not handle it alone. Because you’ve had this diagnosis before, you need a prompt review by your treating doctor or another mental-health professional.

If you might hurt yourself or someone else, cannot tell what is real, or feel unsafe, do not stay alone—ask a parent or trusted adult to take you to the nearest hospital emergency department now.

For the next little while:

  • Stay with a trusted adult and tell them you may be having a relapse.
  • Take only medicines already prescribed, exactly as directed; do not start, stop, or change a dose yourself.
  • Avoid alcohol, cannabis, and other drugs, which can worsen psychosis.
  • Move away from weapons, medicines you do not need, heights, or anything else you could use to harm yourself.

Tell me what you meant after “but,” and whether you are safe right now. Are you hearing or seeing things, or believing something that people around you say is not true?
