Self-esteem: questions answered

Answered 8 October 2026 at 11:11 pm PKT

Someone I trusted called me pagal and dumb. I can't stop thinking about it and it makes me feel worthless. How do I stop hurting so much?

That hurts deeply, and it is not a small thing. When someone you trusted calls you pagal or dumb, it hits right where you are most vulnerable. The pain shows that you cared about their opinion, and that is human. But here is the truth: those words are about the person who said them, not about you. Calling someone names is a sign of their own frustration or inability to handle a situation. It does not become a fact about you just because it was said.

One thing that can help is to separate their voice from your own. Right now, their words are playing on a loop in your head as if they are your own thoughts. Try this: every time that thought comes, say to yourself, "That is what X said to me. It is not what I believe about myself." Even if you do not fully believe it yet, saying it starts to create a gap between their words and your sense of worth. You are not pagal, and you are not dumb. Someone else's anger or carelessness does not rewrite who you are.

Another small thing: think of one person who has seen you differently, someone who has valued you or called you kind, smart, or capable. Hold that memory for a moment. That person's view is as real as the one who hurt you. You get to decide which voice you listen to more often. The hurt will take time to fade, but it will fade faster if you keep reminding yourself that their opinion is not the final truth. Zara is here to talk whenever you need.
