Sudden Suicidal Thoughts: How to Stay Safe Right Now

Answered 23 September 2026 at 4:54 pm PKT

If suicidal thoughts are sudden and feel hard to control, focus first on getting through the next few minutes safely. This page gives immediate steps for when you are alone, cannot reach anyone, or may act on the thoughts.

I’m having sudden thoughts of killing myself and finding it very hard to stay in control. I’m alone and can’t reach anyone right now—what can I do immediately to stay safe?

Stay with me here. This is an emergency, and your only job right now is to stay alive for the next few minutes; you do not have to solve everything tonight.

  • Move away from anything you could use to hurt yourself—medicines, weapons, ropes, sharp objects, or a balcony/window. Put it in another room or outside your immediate reach.
  • If you can leave, go now to a public, well-lit place such as a hospital reception, shop, neighbour’s door, or anywhere with people. Tell the first person there, “I may hurt myself and need help staying safe.”
  • If you cannot leave, sit on the floor away from danger and keep your hands busy with a cold drink or a towel. Unlock your door if it is safe to do so.
  • Set a timer for ten minutes. Breathe out slowly and name five things you can see, four you can hear, and three you can feel.

Reply with just safe or not safe. If it is “not safe,” tell me what is closest to you that could hurt you, and I’ll help you move away from it.
