Omega-3 (fish oil)

مچھلی کا تیل · EPA, DHA, fish oil
Reasonable human evidence

One of the better-supported add-ons — but the ratio matters, and most bottles get it wrong.

This is information, not medical advice. This page is information, not medical advice. Nothing here is a prescription, a diagnosis or a recommendation to take anything, and none of it replaces a doctor who knows your history. Supplements are not harmless because they are natural: they interact with prescription medicines, some are unsafe in pregnancy, and a few can cause real damage. Talk to a doctor or pharmacist before starting anything here, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, under 18, have a liver, kidney or heart condition, or take any regular medication. Never stop a prescribed antidepressant to try a supplement instead.

What it is

Two fats found in oily fish, EPA and DHA, built into cell membranes and involved in how inflammation is regulated.

What the research says

Among the most-studied supplements here, with an unusually specific finding: formulas that are mostly EPA repeatedly outperform those that are mostly DHA, which probably explains why trials of ordinary fish oil come out mixed. Effects are clearest as an addition to treatment and in more severe depression. Anxiety evidence is thinner but not empty.

What studies have used

Trials showing benefit generally used at least 1 g of EPA daily from products where EPA outweighs DHA. Read the back of the bottle: many "1000 mg fish oil" capsules contain only a few hundred mg of EPA and DHA between them.

Recorded because a person who has decided to try something will find a number somewhere, and a forum's number is worse than a trial's. It is not a recommendation, and the right amount for you depends on things only a doctor who knows your history can weigh.

Who should be careful, and what it interacts with

Thins the blood a little at higher doses - tell your doctor if you take warfarin or aspirin, or before surgery. Fishy burps are less likely with food or if kept in the fridge. Not for fish allergy; algae-based EPA and DHA exist for vegetarians.

In Pakistan

Widely sold and not expensive. Eating oily fish two or three times a week does the same job more cheaply, and rahu, trout and mackerel are easier to find than a good capsule in most cities.

Before you take it

Tell your doctor or pharmacist about everything else you take, prescription and herbal both. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, under 18, or have a liver, kidney, heart or thyroid condition, ask first. And if what brought you here is that you have been feeling low or frightened for weeks, that deserves more than a supplement — ask us anything, anonymously, or talk to us on WhatsApp.
