Can I Ask a Male Supporter for Help Without Sharing Personal Issues?

Answered 15 September 2026 at 4:33 am PKT

You can need support and still decide what you do not want to discuss. This page explains how to set clear boundaries with a male supporter, protect your privacy, and find support that feels safe.

Is it okay to not want to talk about personal issues with a male supporter, even if you need support?

Yes, absolutely. Needing support does not mean you must discuss personal matters with someone you do not feel comfortable with. You can ask for a woman supporter, another professional, or a written conversation instead.

You do not need to justify your preference. Say simply: “I’m not comfortable discussing personal issues with a male supporter. Is there a woman I can speak to?”

If the situation is urgent and no one else is available, share only what is necessary to keep you safe, then ask for a female supporter when possible.
