Coping with Cruelty and Mistreatment

Answered 2 August 2026 at 4:26 pm PKT

If you are experiencing cruelty or mistreatment, know that your feelings are valid and you are not alone. This page offers ways to understand and cope with such experiences, and how to begin your healing journey.

I work as a house helper and the family I work for shout at me and cut my pay for the smallest mistake. I go home crying most nights and I have started to believe I deserve to be treated this way.

It sounds like you are going through a very difficult time, and it's heartbreaking to hear you go home crying most nights and feel you deserve this treatment. Please know that no one deserves to be shouted at, have their pay unfairly cut, or to feel this way. What is happening to you is not normal or fair, and it is absolutely not your fault. Your worth as a person is not determined by the mistakes you make or how others choose to treat you.

When someone is constantly critical and unfair, it can really wear down your spirit and make you doubt yourself. It's understandable that you might start to believe what they are saying, especially when you are in such a vulnerable position. This kind of treatment is harmful to your well-being and your peace of mind. You deserve respect and fair treatment in any work situation.

It might help to talk about what you are experiencing with someone you trust, like a close friend, a family member, or someone in your community who you feel understands you. Sometimes just sharing your burden can bring a little relief and help you see things more clearly. Remember, Zara is also here if you want to talk confidentially about how you're feeling and explore your options without judgment.

Hold onto the understanding that you are valuable and deserving of kindness and dignity. There are people who care and resources available to help you navigate challenging situations like this. You don't have to carry this burden alone.
