Dealing with life after divorce in Pakistan

Answered 12 April 2025 at 6:58 pm PKT

Saima, it's completely understandable that you're finding it difficult to adjust and feeling overwhelmed by what people are saying. Many women in Pakistan face similar challenges after divorce, and your feelings are very normal.

Mera divorce ho gaya hai, aur ab log mujh par tarah tarah ki baatein karte hain. Society mein adjust karna mushkil lag raha hai. Kya yeh sab normal hai?

You are not alone in feeling this way. In our society, divorce often comes with heavy social judgment, especially for women, and unfortunately, gossip and unwanted comments are a common reaction. This pressure can make it incredibly hard to simply live your life and heal, but please know that this is a reflection of societal attitudes, not a reflection of your worth.

It’s important to understand that the things people say are often based on misunderstandings, tradition, or simply a lack of empathy, and they are not your fault. You do not have to internalize their opinions or feel responsible for their judgment. Your journey is yours alone, and you have every right to move forward with dignity.

A crucial first step is to identify and lean on a strong support system. Find one or two people in your life – a close family member, a trusted friend, or an elder – who genuinely support you without judgment. These are the people you can talk to honestly, who will listen, and who will remind you of your strength. Try to limit your interactions with those who bring negativity into your life.

Next, focus on rebuilding your own life and finding small sources of peace and joy. This could mean rediscovering a hobby, learning a new skill, focusing on your children if you have them, or simply creating a routine that feels good for you. Taking control of these aspects of your life can help you regain a sense of purpose and stability amidst the noise.

You also have the right to set boundaries with people who pry or speak unkindly. You don't owe anyone a detailed explanation of your divorce. A polite but firm response like, "Allah behtar jaanta hai" or "Main ab apni zindagi mein aage barhna chahti hoon" can often be enough to signal that the topic is closed. Sometimes, simply changing the subject or walking away is also a valid option.

Remember, your identity and worth are not defined by your marital status or what others choose to say. You are a strong, resilient woman, and you deserve to live a life free from judgment. Focus on your well-being, nurture your inner strength, and continue to move forward one step at a time.
