Dealing with Suicidal Thoughts and Depression in Pakistan

Answered 4 November 2026 at 1:16 pm PKT

If you're struggling with depression and suicidal thoughts, know you are not alone and help is available. This page offers practical steps and local resources for finding support in Pakistan right now.

I've been feeling very depressed and having suicidal thoughts for the last few months. It's hard and I'm struggling, feeling very alone.

What you've described — months of depression with suicidal thoughts, and carrying it alone — is a serious thing, and I'm glad you put it into words here instead of keeping it inside your head. That kind of tiredness isn't weakness. Suicidal thoughts usually mean the pain has gone past what one person can hold by themselves, not that you actually want to be gone.

One question worth answering honestly, just to yourself: have you thought about how or when? If yes, or if there are moments you feel you might act on it, then today is the day to not be alone — go to a hospital emergency department, or ask someone to stay with you. Don't wait for it to get worse first.

What to do in that moment

When the thought comes, it arrives like it's urgent and permanent. It's neither. These help:

  • Decide only to get through the next hour, nothing bigger than that.
  • Tell one person, even a two-line message: "I'm not okay tonight."
  • Move anything you could hurt yourself with out of the house or give it to someone to keep.
  • Sit where other people are, even if you don't say a word to them.
  • Write the thought down on paper instead of holding it in your head.

Getting help that's possible

Treatment for this exists and it works, and you don't need to be rich or fluent in therapy-speak to get it. Pakistan has fewer than 500 psychiatrists for over 240 million people, so the wait and the cost are real problems — but a GP can start you on the path, and many hospitals have psychiatry departments with far lower fees than private clinics. Our [Find a professional](/find-help) page lists people by city, and the [free self-test](/test) is a place to start if you want to see in writing how bad it has been. If money or family is the obstacle, say so — that's a practical problem, and there are ways around it.

The loneliness part

Feeling alone inside a full house is very common here. You can be surrounded by family and still have nobody you can say the truth to, because of what they'll think, or what will get back to relatives, or log kya kahenge. That silence makes everything heavier than it needs to be. You only need one person who can hear it — a friend, a cousin, a teacher, a doctor — not everyone.

You've been carrying this for months, which means you've already been doing something very hard without help. That can change. Zara from our team is here to talk whenever you need, including at two in the morning when it's worst — you don't have to have the right words ready.
