Feeling Lonely in Marriage? When Your Husband Doesn't Talk

Asked by Rabia, Islamabad · 7 September 2026 at 6:59 pm PKT

It's incredibly painful to feel lonely and unheard, especially within your own marriage. This page offers understanding and practical ways to navigate challenges when communication is low and you feel invisible.

I have been married for two years and my husband is not cruel, but he never talks to me. I spend all day in my in-laws' house feeling invisible, and I cry in the bathroom so nobody hears me. Is something wrong with me for feeling this lonely inside my own marriage?

It is completely understandable to feel lonely and invisible when your husband does not talk to you, especially when you are living in your in-laws' house. There is nothing wrong with you for feeling this way; these are very natural emotions when connection is missing in such an important relationship. Feeling unheard and unseen inside your own marriage can be incredibly isolating, and it's brave of you to acknowledge these feelings.

Living in a joint family can also make it harder to find private moments or feel like you have your own space. Many people in Pakistan face similar situations where communication in a marriage struggles amidst family life and expectations.

Do one thing — try to find a quiet moment to talk to your husband, perhaps when you are alone together. You could tell him simply, "I feel lonely sometimes, and I miss talking to you." Focus on how you feel, rather than making it sound like an accusation. See if that opens up a conversation, even a small one. Sometimes, men might not realise the impact of their silence, or they might struggle to express themselves.

It might also help to find small ways to connect with other people in the house, if possible, or even a trusted friend outside the home. Look for little things that bring you a sense of peace or purpose in your day, like a hobby or a quiet moment with a book. Remember that your feelings are real and deserve to be acknowledged. Zara is here if you want to talk more about what you are going through.
