How to Sleep Better When Thoughts Keep You Awake

Answered 14 September 2026 at 8:15 am PKT

If racing thoughts, stress, or waking through the night are affecting your sleep, small changes in your routine can help. This page explains practical ways to fall asleep, stay asleep, and know when to seek medical or mental health support.

can't sleep well, different thoughts, or broken sleep. what should I do?

Poor sleep with many thoughts is common, and broken sleep can make the thoughts feel louder the next day. Don’t take tension about one rough night; trying hard to sleep often keeps the mind more awake.

Try this tonight before bed

  • Keep one fixed wake-up time tomorrow, even if tonight is poor.
  • Avoid caffeine after lunch, and keep your phone out of bed.
  • Write tomorrow’s worries or tasks on paper, then close it.
  • If you are awake for roughly 20–30 minutes, get up, sit in dim light, and do something boring until you feel sleepy again.
  • Don’t argue with the thoughts. Gently say “thinking” and return your attention to your breathing.

If this happens most nights for a few weeks or affects your daily life, speak to a doctor or mental-health professional. If the thoughts include harming yourself or you feel unsafe, stay with someone you trust and tell them plainly that you need company tonight.
