Missing Someone Who Has Moved On: Coping Across Countries

Answered 12 September 2026 at 1:18 am PKT

Missing someone deeply is painful, especially when they seem to have moved on and distance makes contact difficult. This page offers practical ways to manage the longing, set boundaries, and rebuild your life without forcing closure from them.

How do you cope with missing someone deeply when they seem to have moved on, and communication across different countries feels impossible?

It is painfully confusing to miss someone deeply when they appear to have moved on, especially when time zones, cost, or poor communication make every conversation harder. You do not have to decide tonight whether to let go forever; start by reducing the hurt you are feeding every day.

Try these small steps:

  • If contact is possible, send one calm message asking for an honest conversation about where things stand, then give them time to answer.
  • If there is no answer, avoid sending repeated messages or studying their online activity; their response, or lack of one, tells you more than guessing.
  • If you both want to stay connected, agree on one realistic routine, such as a call at a fixed time each week.
  • Write what you wish you could say in a private note instead of sending it while you are very upset.
  • Keep one ordinary routine firm—eat properly, sleep, work or study, and get outside for a short walk.

Their moving on may be real, or it may only look that way from another country. Either way, their apparent distance does not mean you must punish yourself or wait indefinitely.

For tonight, put the phone away after a set time, drink some water, and do something that occupies your hands. Missing them can sit beside you without being allowed to run the whole day, inshallah.
