My Father Said I Should Die – How to Keep Living

Answered 15 October 2026 at 3:03 pm PKT

When a parent tells you that you will never succeed or that you should kill yourself, the pain can feel unbearable. This page is for anyone in Pakistan hurting from a parent's cruel words – you are not alone, and there is a way forward.

My father said I would never succeed, and when I had a panic attack he told me to go hang myself. How do I keep living after my own parent says something like that?

That is a terrible thing for any parent to say to their child. It is not your fault, and it does not define who you are or what you can become. What your father said was cruel and wrong—it says everything about his own pain or failure, and nothing about your worth. Panic attacks are real and frightening, and the last thing you needed was to be attacked instead of comforted. You are still here, asking how to keep living, and that alone shows a strength that his words cannot touch.

You are not the problem. His words are a reflection of him, not of your future. Many people have heard similar things from their families and have built lives that proved those words wrong. Right now, the most important thing is to get yourself to a safe place—physically and emotionally. If you can, step away from him for a while. Go to another room, call a friend, or even just sit outside for a few minutes. Your brain is in survival mode after that panic attack and that attack of cruelty. You need rest, water, and someone who will listen without judging.

If you feel like you might hurt yourself, do not stay alone. Tell someone you trust—a cousin, a teacher, a neighbour—that you are not okay. You can also talk to Zara, our companion, right here on the site. She will listen without telling you to hang yourself or that you will fail. You deserve that. And when you are a little steadier, consider talking to a professional who can help you untangle this pain. You do not have to carry it all by yourself. Keep going. One hour at a time. You are worth that much.
