Overthinking and Brain Fog: Why You Feel Empty and Irritable

Answered 26 October 2026 at 10:38 pm PKT

Constant overthinking can leave you exhausted, irritable, and unable to focus. This page explains why your mind won't stop and how to help others understand what you're going through.

My mind never stops overthinking every small thing, and it gives me headaches. I feel empty and irritable, and I can't focus even when I try hard. How do I make people understand what I'm going through?

That is genuinely hard. When your own mind won't stop and your head hurts from it, and you feel empty and irritable at the same time, it can feel like nobody sees the weight you are carrying. You want them to understand, but mental health is not something most of us in Pakistan talk about openly, and people often mistake it for ordinary "tension" or laziness. The problem is not that you are not explaining well enough – it is that the words we have for this kind of suffering do not match what people expect to hear.

Try describing one symptom at a time. Instead of saying "my mind never stops," tell someone close to you: "I keep thinking about small things I said or did and I cannot switch it off, and that gives me headaches." That is concrete and harder to dismiss. You can also use a simple analogy like, "It feels like my brain is a phone with a hundred tabs open, and it won't let me close any of them. I feel exhausted by it." When people hear the headache and the exhaustion together, they often take it more seriously.

It also helps to name the emptiness and irritability as part of the same thing, not as separate moods. You can say, "I am not angry at you – I just get irritable because my mind is so tired, and I feel empty underneath it. That is what this does." Most people do not know that overthinking can drain you that way, so you are teaching them.

And do one thing for yourself: you do not have to make everyone understand. Pick one or two people who already listen to you a little, and let the others be. You do not owe them a full explanation. Your focus right now is making the overthinking and headaches easier on you – that matters more than getting everyone else to see it.
