I was diagnosed with psychotic depression years ago and have recently had another episode. I’m afraid of taking medication again because it causes extreme side effects—what can I do?
Psychotic depression can return, and it is not something to manage alone. You also do not have to repeat the same treatment that caused severe side effects; a psychiatrist can review what happened and discuss a safer plan.
If you feel unsafe
If you may harm yourself or someone else, feel driven by voices, cannot sleep, cannot eat or drink, or cannot look after yourself, get emergency help now. Go to the nearest emergency department with someone you trust, or call your local emergency service.
If you are having a severe reaction to medicine—confusion, high fever, very stiff muscles, fainting, severe restlessness, or a spreading rash—seek urgent medical care.
Tell a professional what happened
Write down the side effects, when they began, how long they lasted, and what you stopped or changed.
Tell the doctor that you are afraid of medication again. Ask what changes or alternatives may reduce side effects, and what support can be added while your treatment is reviewed.
Do not change medicine alone
Stopping or restarting suddenly can make symptoms worse or cause other risks. Follow your current instructions until you can speak with a clinician, unless a doctor has told you to stop.
