Should I Message Them on New Year After No Contact?

Answered 17 September 2026 at 10:43 pm PKT

This page explains how to decide whether to send one New Year message after months of respecting no contact. It offers a consent-based approach, a simple message template, and guidance on accepting no reply without making things worse.

I’ve been respecting someone’s wish for no contact for months now, but I still admire them and wonder if I should reach out on New Year to ask if they’re open to talking again. My mind keeps telling me to try one more time, but I’m scared it will only make things worse. What should I do?

If they asked for no contact and have not clearly changed their mind, do not message them on New Year. A special date does not make their boundary expire, and another attempt may make things worse.

Do one thing — write what you wish to say in a note, but do not send it. Then spend that time with someone else or plan something that keeps you from waiting by your phone. You can admire them and still choose not to disturb their peace.

If they ever clearly show that they want contact again, you can respond then—slowly, and without expecting everything to return to how it was.

Still on your mind?
