Why Do I Overthink and Feel Hopeless Under Academic Pressure?

Answered 3 October 2026 at 11:27 pm PKT

This page explains why academic pressure can trigger overthinking, hopelessness, and even suicidal thoughts that you know you would never act on. You will learn the common reasons behind these feelings and how to find motivation and focus again.

Why do I keep overthinking and feeling so hopeless, especially with academic pressure? I sometimes get suicidal thoughts even though I know I would never act on them, and I can’t focus or find motivation to study no matter how hard I try. I just want to understand why this is happening to me.

This is genuinely hard, and you are not alone in feeling it. Academic pressure in Pakistan can feel like your whole future depends on every exam, and when your own mind starts working against you — overthinking, no focus, no motivation — it becomes a loop that feels impossible to break. The hopelessness and even the suicidal thoughts, even when you know you would not act on them, are a sign that your mind is exhausted and needs real support, not that something is wrong with you as a person.

Why this is happening

Your brain is under constant stress — from expectations at home, from competition, from the fear of disappointing people. When that stress stays on for too long, it starts affecting how you think: you get stuck replaying the same worries, you lose the ability to concentrate, and motivation dries up because your mind is protecting itself from more strain. The suicidal thoughts that come but that you would never act on are often what psychologists call "intrusive thoughts" — they pop up when the pressure is unbearable, not because you want to die, but because you desperately want the pressure to stop. It does not mean you are weak or broken. It means you have been carrying too much for too long.

What you can try

  • Break study time into very small chunks — ten minutes of reading, then a five-minute break away from your desk. Pressure to study for hours when you cannot focus only makes the hopelessness worse. Small steps rebuild momentum.
  • Write down the overthinking for five minutes. Do not try to stop it — just put it on paper: "I am scared I will fail. I am scared my family will be disappointed." Once it is outside your head, it has less power over you.
  • Talk to one person you trust — a friend, a cousin, a teacher who is kind. You do not have to say everything. Just "I am really struggling with studies right now" is enough. Isolation makes hopelessness grow.
  • If the suicidal thoughts come again, do one thing that keeps you anchored to the present: splash cold water on your face, hold an ice cube, or step outside and name five things you can see. That helps your brain shift out of the spiral.

The most important thing to remember is that you do not have to fix this all on your own. A therapist or counsellor can help you untangle the pressure and find ways to study that actually work for your brain. It is not a sign of failure — it is a sign that you are taking yourself seriously. Zara is here to talk whenever you need someone to listen.
