Why You Feel Your One Project Isn't Enough for a Job (Even When It Is)

Answered 22 October 2026 at 12:17 am PKT

If you have a strong CV and one solid project but still feel too unqualified to apply anywhere, you are not alone. This page explores why self-doubt holds you back and how to start applying anyway.

I have only one project and my CV is good, but I still feel like it's not enough to get a job. Why can't I bring myself to apply anywhere?

It sounds like you are stuck in a loop where your own mind keeps telling you "this is not enough" even when your CV and project say otherwise. That feeling is real, and many people in Pakistan experience it — especially when the job market feels tight and everyone around you seems to have more. The problem is not your CV; it is the voice inside that says you will be judged, that one gap will make them say no, that you are somehow less than the person who applied yesterday.

This is not laziness. It is a kind of fear that shows up as hesitation, overthinking every line, and then avoiding the whole thing. It can be paralysing.

What is really going on

  • Imposter syndrome – that feeling that you have somehow tricked people into thinking you are skilled, and they will find out any minute. It is extremely common, even among people with several projects.
  • Fear of rejection – applying means putting yourself out there, and rejection feels personal. Avoiding the application avoids that pain.
  • Perfectionism – you might be waiting for the *perfect* time, the *perfect* application, the *perfect* interview prep. That perfect moment never comes.

None of this means you are not good enough. It means the fear has started driving the bus.

What you can try

  • Do one thing that is not applying – Open the job portal, search for one role that interests you, and close the tab. That counts. Tomorrow write down three lines about why you match that role. No submission, just writing.
  • Send one application without re-reading it – Set a timer for 20 minutes, fill the form, attach your CV, hit submit. Do not let yourself edit it more than once. The first draft is good enough. You can always apply again later.
  • Ask someone you trust to look at your CV – A friend, a former colleague, someone from an university career centre. Let them say "this is fine, send it". Sometimes our own eyes cannot see what is already there.

The single thing that matters most: apply once, today, before you allow yourself to think about it. Just one. The feeling of having done it will shift something in your head.

If this hesitation has been going on for weeks and is stopping you from sleeping or eating, that is something heavier — depression or anxiety can show up this way. In that case, consider going to a mental health professional. You can find one through our page at /find-help. And if you want to talk it out, Zara, our companion, is here on the website whenever you need to say the thoughts out loud.

You have one project and a good CV. That is more than most people start with. Inshallah, the right job will come when you give yourself permission to try.
