How to Stop Feeling Unworthy of Love and Lonely in Class

Answered 16 October 2026 at 8:00 pm PKT

Feeling alone in a crowd and questioning your worth is painful, especially when you're comparing yourself to others. This page offers practical steps to rebuild your self-esteem and find peace from within.

I feel so alone in class watching everyone laugh with their friends while I sit by myself. I’ve been crying over someone who probably doesn’t care, and I wonder if that means I’m not worthy of love. What should I do to find peace and stop feeling like this?

Feeling alone in a room full of laughing people is one of the loneliest feelings there is, and crying over someone who probably doesn't care makes it cut even deeper. It is completely natural to wonder if that means you are not worthy of love, but let me say this plainly: that thought is not true. Your worth does not disappear because one person didn't notice you, and it is not measured by how many people are laughing with you at any given moment.

What your hurt is telling you

When you sit by yourself watching others, your mind starts making up stories — that everyone belongs except you, that something is wrong with you. That is the loneliness talking, not the truth. Most of those people also have moments of feeling left out. The difference is they are too wrapped up in their own lives to notice yours.

And crying over someone who doesn't care is not a sign of weakness. It just means you let yourself want something, and it hurts when it doesn't come back. That pain is real, but it is not evidence that you are unlovable. It is evidence that you cared, and caring is a good thing — even when it stings.

What you can actually do

  • Try talking to one person in class, even about something small like a lesson or a shared joke. One small connection can break the feeling of being invisible.
  • Write down what you are feeling for five minutes. Emptying your mind onto paper often makes the ache a little less loud.
  • Do one thing that is just for you after class — a walk, a favourite meal, listening to music you love. It reminds you that your own company matters.
  • If it is possible, spend time with family or a friend outside that class, so the whole day is not measured by that one hour.
  • Remember that peace does not come from someone else choosing you. It comes slowly, as you start choosing yourself.

None of this will fix everything overnight, and that is okay. Be patient with yourself. You are not behind in life because you feel this way, and you are not unworthy simply because someone else did not stay. That person's carelessness says nothing about your value — it only tells you that they were not the right person for you. Inshallah, the right people will come, and one of them will be the you who learns to sit with your own heart and still be okay.
