Am I Being Dramatic or Do I Need a Psychologist?

Answered 3 November 2026 at 5:39 pm PKT

If you are exhausted by your own thoughts and unsure whether your pain is serious enough for professional help, this page is for you. It explains how to judge when speaking to a psychologist is worthwhile and what to expect from taking that step.

My mental state is getting worse and I want to speak to a professional psychologist, but I keep wondering if I'm just being dramatic. I'm sick and tired of myself, and I can't tell whether what I'm feeling is serious enough to need real help.

Wondering whether you're just being dramatic is itself part of what happens when you're feeling low. So let me say it plainly: you are not making this up. The fact that you're sick and tired of yourself, and that it's getting worse, is real. You don't need to prove how bad it is before you're allowed to ask for help.

There is no test you have to pass to deserve a psychologist. If your days feel heavy, if you're exhausted by your own thoughts, if you're losing sleep or interest in things — that is serious enough. Many people wait until they "hit rock bottom" or until someone else tells them it's serious. That waiting just makes it harder. Needing help is not a character flaw.

What you can do today

  • Go to depression.pk/find-help and look through the list of professionals. You don't have to commit to anything, just looking is a start.
  • Message Zara on this site and talk about what's happening. She's a companion from our team, there whenever you need to talk.
  • Tell one person you trust — a friend, a sibling, someone who won't say "stop overthinking" — that you're thinking of seeing a psychologist. Saying it out loud makes it feel more real and less shameful.

The thing to remember

You are not "being dramatic." You are struggling, and struggling is a good enough reason to get support. The worry that you're exaggerating often comes from years of hearing that other people have it worse, or from "log kya kahenge." But your mind is your own, and you're the one living inside it. If it feels heavy, it's heavy.

You don't owe anyone a dramatic story before you can see a professional. You can go just because you're tired, and that's perfectly fine. It will be fine, inshallah — but take that first step today, even if it's small.
