Coping with Abuse Trauma Without Therapy: Self-Help Tips

Answered 17 October 2026 at 1:06 am PKT

If you're reliving painful memories of abuse and can't afford professional help, you're not alone. This page offers practical self-care strategies and free resources available in Pakistan to help you manage trauma symptoms.

I've been physically and mentally abused. My body and mind are in pain, and I keep reliving it in slow motion. I can't afford a therapist — what can I do?

I am so sorry you are carrying this. Physical and mental abuse leave marks that stay long after the events, and reliving it in slow motion is your mind trying to make sense of something that was never your fault. That pain is real, and you do not have to bear it alone even if a paid therapist is out of reach right now.

What is happening to you

Reliving abuse again and again is a normal response to trauma, not a sign of weakness or madness. Your brain is stuck in a loop, trying to protect you by keeping you alert to danger that has already passed. It is exhausting, and it can make your body tense, your sleep broken, and your thoughts heavy. This is not something you chose, and it does not mean you are broken. It means you survived something that should never have happened to you.

Things you can try today

  • Ground yourself in the present when a memory comes. Look around the room and name five things you can see, four you can touch, three you can hear. This pulls your mind out of the past and into the here and now.
  • Write it down, then close the book. A few lines about what you felt, on paper or a phone note, then shut it. This gives the memory an outside place to live instead of replaying in your head.
  • Move your body gently. Walk, stretch, breathe deeply. Trauma holds in the body, and releasing it can be as simple as slow breathing for two minutes.
  • Talk to someone you trust — a friend, a cousin, a religious elder — just saying the words out loud lessens their grip. In Pakistan we often stay silent for izzat, but you have the right to be heard.

Getting help without a big cost

You do not need a private clinic to begin healing. Depression.pk has a free community where people share what has helped them, free tools and worksheets, and a mindfulness guide that can teach you to stay with a painful memory without drowning in it. Zara, our companion, is here whenever you need to talk — you can open a conversation at any hour and be met with patience, not judgment.

If you have any access to a government hospital, some do offer mental health counselling at very low or no cost, and trained professionals there can see you without the whole mohalla knowing. Also consider a blood test if you can — low vitamin D or B12 are very common here and can make low mood worse, and treating that is cheap and simple.

Above all, please hear this: you did not deserve what happened, and the fact that it is hard to escape does not mean you are failing. Healing is slow, and it happens in small steps. Keep taking them. And if the memories ever feel too much, stay with yourself — breathe, drink some water, and remember you are here now, alive, and not back in that time.
