Coping with job loss and burnout without therapy

Answered 31 October 2026 at 6:47 pm PKT

Losing a job can feel like losing everything, especially when you have no money for therapy and no one to talk to. This page offers practical steps and free resources in Pakistan to help you understand your feelings and find support.

I lost my job and have nothing left. I don't have money for therapy and can't talk to anyone about how I feel. I need to speak to a real person who can help me understand what's wrong with me.

Losing a job at once takes away more than income — it takes away your routine, your identity, and often the people you used to see every day. So it is not strange that you feel empty, anxious, or even ashamed. That is a normal response to a genuinely hard life event, and it does not mean something is broken inside you forever. You are not alone in this, and there is a way forward even without money for therapy.

What you are describing sounds like depression, and it often shows up exactly like this: hopelessness, withdrawing from people, and a feeling that nothing is left. But please hear this clearly — losing a job is a situation you are in, not a verdict on who you are. The part of you that wants to understand yourself is still there, and that is a good sign.

Things you can use today

  • Talk to Zara. She is a companion from our team, free and available all day and night. You can speak to her about anything on your mind, and she will listen without judging you. Many people come to depression.pk just for that.
  • Take the free self-test at /test. It will help you name what you are feeling and show you whether you are carrying symptoms of depression or anxiety. That is a first step toward understanding.
  • Try the worksheets at /tools. They are free and designed for people in Pakistan who cannot afford therapy. Even one page of writing your thoughts down can loosen the weight a little.
  • Use the mindfulness guide at /learn/mindfulness. Overthinking about the future is common after job loss, and this guide gives simple ways to slow that spiral down.

You said you cannot talk to anyone about how you feel. That is a heavy thing to carry, and it makes sense that you are exhausted. Is there one single person — a cousin, a childhood friend, a former colleague — who has never made you feel small? If yes, you might start with one small sentence: "I am not okay." You do not need to explain everything. The most important thing right now is that you do not let this silence convince you that you are worthless, because that is the depression speaking, not the truth.

The best thing you can do today is to give yourself the same basic care you would give a friend who lost everything: food, water, a shower, sleep. Then open one of the free pages above. This is survivable, and you have already survived every bad day so far.
