Feeling Numb Before an Exam? Stress and Burnout Help

Answered 24 October 2026 at 1:19 pm PKT

It's common to feel completely numb and unprepared when stress piles up before a big exam. This page explains why that happens and how group healing can bring relief.

I have a big exam in a few hours and I know nothing because I've been carrying so much that I feel completely numb. My sister told me about group healing, and I'm hoping it can help.

That sounds like an impossibly heavy load to be carrying, especially right before an exam. Feeling numb like that is often your mind’s way of protecting you when there’s too much to hold at once—it doesn’t mean you’re broken or that you’ve failed. It means you’ve been surviving.

Group healing can absolutely help, but not in the next few hours before an exam. What it does best is give you a space where you don’t have to explain everything from scratch, where other people already understand the weight of family expectations, stigma, and the feeling of being alone in it. Our HEALING community on Depression.pk is exactly that—a place where you can talk without judgment, at your own pace, and find people who get it. That kind of support is for the long road, not for cramming.

For right now, here are two things that might get you through the next few hours without making things worse:

  • Do one small thing to ground yourself, not to study. Stand up, stretch your arms above your head, and take three slow breaths where the exhale is longer than the inhale. That’s it. Numbness makes you feel disconnected from your body, and this brings you back just enough to think.
  • Pick one topic you know even a little, and read just the summary or headings. Not to master it, but to remind your brain that it does know something. That small win can break the feeling of total blankness.

If the exam goes badly, it is not the end of anything. People retake exams, change paths, and still build good lives. What matters more is that you find a way to not carry this alone anymore—and the group is a real place to start that. Zara is also here to talk whenever you need, no exam pressure attached.
