Coping with Loneliness When Your Husband Works Abroad

Asked by Zara, 30, Lahore · 27 February 2025 at 12:34 am PKT

Zara, it's completely understandable to feel overwhelmed and lonely when your husband is living far away. Many women in Pakistan face similar challenges when managing a household alone and worrying about a spouse abroad.

My husband moved abroad for work a year ago, and I miss him terribly. Dealing with all the responsibilities here alone, plus the constant worry about his well-being there, has made me feel very isolated and stressed. How do I cope with this loneliness and anxiety?

The emotional weight of separation, combined with the practicalities of running a household alone and the constant worry about his well-being, can feel incredibly heavy. It's natural to experience stress and anxiety during this time, and acknowledging these feelings is the first step towards finding ways to cope.

Even with the distance, maintaining a strong connection with your husband is vital. Try to schedule regular video calls, even if they are short, to share small everyday moments, not just problems. Sending voice notes or pictures throughout the day can also help you both feel more present in each other's lives, bridging the physical gap.

To combat isolation, actively rebuild your local support system. Reach out to your immediate family – your parents, siblings, or a trusted aunt – for support and company. Spending time with friends who understand your situation can also provide comfort and distraction. Don't hesitate to ask for help with errands or childcare if family members are available.

Managing responsibilities alone can be exhausting. Identify one or two tasks you might be able to delegate, even if it's just asking a cousin to help with school drop-offs occasionally or hiring temporary help for a specific chore. This can free up some mental and physical space for you.

Make sure to carve out a little time each day just for yourself, even if it's only 15-20 minutes. This could involve reading a favorite book, listening to calming music, going for a short walk in your neighbourhood, or simply having a cup of chai in peace. These small moments of self-care are not luxuries; they are essential for your well-being.

When worries about his safety or your situation become overwhelming, try a simple breathing exercise: inhale slowly for four counts, hold for four, and exhale slowly for six counts. Repeat this a few times to calm your mind. Focusing on what is within your control, like your daily routine and self-care, can also reduce anxiety.
