Feeling Anxious and Angry? How to Cope

Answered 28 June 2024 at 3:11 am PKT

Many people, especially as they get older, find themselves easily angered and constantly uneasy, often followed by regret. These feelings are deeply connected and can be signs that your mind is overwhelmed by anxiety, but there are practical ways to find more calm.

Mujhe choti choti baton par ghussa aane laga hai aur phir baad mein bohot afsos hota hai. Dil bohot ghabrahat mein rehta hai, jese kuch bura hone wala ho.

Shazia ji, your feelings of getting angry easily over small things, followed by regret, and a constant unease in your heart as if something bad is about to happen – these are deeply familiar to many people. It sounds like your mind and body might be reacting to underlying anxiety. When we're constantly worried or feeling ghabrahat, our patience wears thin, and even small frustrations can feel overwhelming, leading to quick anger and then that heavy feeling of afsos.

That persistent feeling of ghabrahat, like a dark cloud or a sense of impending doom, is a classic sign that your nervous system is on high alert. It's as if your mind is trying to protect you from an unseen threat, keeping you constantly tense and watchful. This state is exhausting, and it can make everyday life feel much heavier and more difficult to navigate calmly.

One of the most effective and free tools you have is your breath. When you feel anger rising or ghabrahat in your chest, try this: sit comfortably, close your eyes if you can, and just focus on your breath. Breathe in slowly through your nose, counting to four, hold for one count, then breathe out slowly through your mouth, counting to six. Do this for just five minutes. This simple act tells your body it's safe to calm down, even in the middle of a busy day.

Before you react to something that makes you angry, try to create a small pause. Take one deep breath and ask yourself, 'Is this situation truly as big as my anger feels right now, or is my anxiety making it seem worse?' Sometimes, just this tiny moment of reflection can give you enough space to choose a calmer response. Afterwards, if you still feel upset, try writing down what happened or talking to a trusted friend or family member who listens without judgment.

Incorporating gentle movement into your day can also make a big difference. A short walk in the morning or evening, even just around your house or garden, helps release some of that pent-up anxious energy. Maintaining a simple, consistent daily routine, even for small things like meal times or specific chores, can give your mind a sense of predictability and control, which can be very comforting when anxiety makes everything feel uncertain.

Remember, Shazia ji, these feelings are not a sign of weakness, but a signal that your mind needs some care and attention. It's okay to feel this way, and many people in our society face similar struggles but hesitate to talk about them. Start with one small change this week, something you feel you can easily do. Be patient and kind to yourself; even small steps towards managing these feelings are significant victories. You deserve to feel more peace and less ghabrahat.
