Feeling Lonely After Moving to a New City Like Islamabad?

Answered 4 January 2026 at 11:14 pm PKT

Moving to a new city for work, especially without knowing anyone, can feel incredibly isolating. It's completely normal to feel this way, particularly when the weekends roll around and you're missing your old friends.

Main Lahore se shift hua hoon Islamabad job ke liye but yahan koi dost nahi ban pa raha. Bohat akela feel hota hai, specially weekends par.

Bilal, what you're describing is a very common experience for many young people who relocate for a job. It takes time and effort to build new connections, and feeling akelapan (loneliness) in the interim is a valid and understandable emotion, not a sign that anything is wrong with you.

Your workplace is often the easiest place to start. Look for colleagues who seem friendly and approachable. You could try inviting someone for chai during a break, or ask if anyone wants to grab lunch together. These small, casual interactions are a great way to gauge who you might connect with and can slowly lead to deeper friendships outside of work.

Beyond work, think about your interests. Do you enjoy walking, reading, or playing a sport? Islamabad has beautiful parks like F-9 Park or trails in the Margalla Hills where you can go for a walk and enjoy nature, which can lift your spirits. Joining a local gym, a sports club, or even a book club can put you in contact with people who share your passions.

Social media can also be helpful. Look for Facebook groups for 'Expats in Islamabad' or 'Islamabad Social' or groups focused on specific hobbies like hiking, photography, or board games. These groups often organise meetups and events, giving you a low-pressure way to meet new people in a public setting. Volunteering for a cause you care about is another fantastic way to meet kind-hearted individuals.

Remember that building friendships is a gradual process. Don't put too much pressure on yourself to find a 'best friend' instantly. Start with simple conversations, be open to new experiences, and give people a chance. Even a friendly chat with the local shopkeeper or a neighbour can make you feel more connected to your new environment.

It takes courage to put yourself out there, and every small step you take to connect with others is a step in the right direction. Be patient and kind to yourself through this transition period, and know that many people have felt exactly what you're feeling right now.
