Feeling Overwhelmed and Anxious After Having a Baby?

Answered 27 August 2024 at 6:20 pm PKT

Mariam, what you're describing is incredibly common for new mothers. The journey of welcoming a baby brings immense joy, but also significant changes that can trigger feelings of anxiety and dread.

We just had our first baby a few months ago, and I feel incredibly overwhelmed and anxious about everything. I constantly fear I'm not a good mother, and sometimes I feel a sudden dread wash over me.

It sounds like you're experiencing what many new mothers do – a mix of intense love and overwhelming anxiety. Your body and life have undergone a massive transformation, and it's completely normal to feel stretched thin and worried about everything, especially with the added responsibilities of a newborn. Please know that these feelings do not make you a bad mother; they make you a human being adjusting to a profound life change.

That fear of 'not being a good mother' is a sign of how deeply you care, not a reflection of your ability. It's easy to feel immense pressure to be perfect, but remember that your baby primarily needs a present and loving parent, not a flawless one. This week, try to focus on one small positive interaction with your baby each day, like a few minutes of skin-to-skin contact, singing a lullaby, or simply holding them close, and remind yourself that your effort is truly enough.

The sudden dread washing over you, often described as a 'panic attack' or intense anxiety surge, is your body's way of reacting to extreme stress and exhaustion. When you feel this overwhelming sensation coming on, try a simple grounding technique: notice five things you can see around you, four things you can physically touch (and actually touch them), three things you can hear, two things you can smell, and one thing you can taste. This can help bring your focus back to the present moment and away from the spiraling thoughts.

Remember, you don't have to carry this burden alone. Talk to your husband, your mother, a trusted aunt, or an elder in your family about how you're truly feeling. Many people will understand and want to help, whether it's by minding the baby for an hour so you can rest, or simply listening without judgment. Accepting support isn't a weakness; it's a smart way to ensure you're strong enough for both yourself and your baby, despite what 'log kya kahenge'.

Even five to ten minutes of quiet time for yourself can make a significant difference. This could be a warm cup of chai alone, listening to a favorite nazm or Quranic recitation, or simply sitting in silence. Don't aim for perfection in motherhood; focus on 'good enough' and celebrate small victories, like getting through another day or managing to eat a proper meal. Small moments of peace can help you recharge.

These overwhelming feelings are often temporary and they do get better as you and your baby settle into a new routine. Be kind and patient with yourself during this demanding phase. You are doing an incredible job, Mariam, and your love for your baby is evident in your concerns. Take it one day, one hour, one moment at a time.
