Finding Help When Facing Violence at Home

Asked by Fatima, 26, Peshawar · 30 January 2026 at 3:10 pm PKT

Fatima, it sounds like you are going through a terrifying time, and your fear is completely understandable. No one deserves to be treated this way, and it is never your fault.

Mera shohar mujh par haath uthata hai jab woh gusse mein hota hai. Mein darr jati hoon aur samajh nahi aata kya karoon. Kahan se help mil sakti hai?

It takes immense courage to speak about what you are experiencing, and we want you to know that this situation is not something you have to accept, nor is it something you brought upon yourself. Your safety and well-being are paramount, and feeling scared when someone you live with hurts you is a natural and valid response.

We understand that in Pakistan, situations like yours are incredibly complex due to family honour, financial dependency, social stigma, and the fear of 'log kya kahenge' (what will people say). Leaving or seeking help can feel impossible, and we recognise that there are many factors making your choices difficult.

One of the first steps you can take is to identify one person you trust deeply – perhaps a close relative, a friend, or a community elder – and confide in them. Choose someone who you know will listen without judgment and offer genuine support, rather than immediately telling you to 'be patient' or 'adjust'. Having just one person aware of your situation can make a huge difference.

It can also be helpful to think about a safety plan, even if it's just in your mind for now. This could involve identifying a safe place you could go within your home during an argument, or knowing the quickest way to reach a trusted neighbour or relative if you ever feel in immediate danger. Simply having a mental plan can give you a small sense of control.

Remember, you don't have to face this alone. You can always talk to Zara here at depression.pk, in complete privacy. We can listen to your concerns, help you explore your options without pressure, and simply be a safe space for you to share your feelings and fears without judgment. We are here to support you.
