How to Find a Therapist Who Truly Listens in Pakistan

Answered 12 October 2026 at 1:43 pm PKT

If you've had a disappointing first session with a therapist who felt cold and distant, you're not alone. This page will help you understand what to look for in a therapist and how to find someone who makes you feel heard and comfortable.

I reached out to a therapist for help with this heavy feeling, but she was so cold and distant that I felt even worse after sharing. How can I find a therapist who truly listens and makes me feel comfortable?

That is genuinely hard. You did the hardest part — you reached out — and instead of relief you got coldness. That is not your fault, and it does not mean therapy is not for you. It means that therapist was not the right one.

What to look for in a therapist

  • Warmth in the first conversation. Many therapists in Pakistan offer a short free call (10–15 minutes) before you book a session. Use it. Ask yourself: does this person sound like they are on my side? Do they let me finish? If they feel rushed or clinical on the phone, they will feel worse in a session.
  • Their approach matters. Some therapists are trained in very structured methods (CBT, for example) and can seem distant if they focus only on techniques. Others practise person-centred therapy, which puts your comfort and the relationship first. When you search, look for words like "compassionate", "client-centred" or "trauma-informed". You can even ask directly: "How do you help someone who has had a bad experience with a cold therapist before?"
  • Ask about their style before booking. A simple question like "Do you usually give feedback and homework, or do you let the session go where I need it to?" tells you a lot. There is no right answer — but you will know which one suits you.

How to find someone in Pakistan

  • Use the directory on our site. Go to /find-help — we list professionals who have been verified and many of them mention their approach. You can filter by city and see if they offer online sessions.
  • Ask for recommendations quietly. If you know someone who has been to therapy and trusts their therapist, ask them. If you do not, try Facebook groups for mental health in Pakistan — people often share names privately. But be careful: not every recommendation is good. Still trust your own gut from that first call.
  • Do not settle for the first name you find. You are hiring someone for a very personal job. It is okay to try two or three before you settle. A good therapist will not be offended if you say "I am looking for the right fit".

If it happens again

  • Tell them. If a session feels cold again, you can say: "I need a bit more warmth from you to feel safe talking." A good therapist will adjust. If they get defensive or dismissive, that is a clear sign to move on.
  • Remember: you are not being difficult. You are being honest about what you need to heal. That is strength, not a problem.

Zara is here on our site if you want to talk through how you are feeling about this, or if you want help thinking through what to ask a potential therapist. You deserve someone who makes you feel held, not worse.
