Managing Fear and Anxiety When You Might Lose Your Job

Answered 19 June 2024 at 8:43 am PKT

Imran, it's completely understandable to feel overwhelmed and anxious when facing job insecurity, especially with a family to support. Many people in Pakistan experience similar fears and the physical symptoms you describe when their livelihood feels threatened.

My company is going through layoffs and I'm terrified I'll lose my job. I have a family to support. My chest feels tight and I keep having these sudden waves of fear, especially at night.

The tight chest and sudden waves of fear you're experiencing are common signs of intense stress and anxiety. Your body is reacting to the perceived threat of losing your job and the very real responsibility you feel for your family. It's a natural, though uncomfortable, response to such a challenging situation, and you are definitely not alone in feeling this way.

When those waves of fear hit and your chest feels tight, try a simple breathing exercise. Find a quiet spot if you can. Breathe in slowly through your nose for a count of four, hold your breath for a count of four, then exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of six. Repeat this for a few minutes. This simple practice can help calm your nervous system, reduce that tight feeling, and bring your mind back to the present moment.

While you can't control your company's decisions, you can take steps to regain a sense of control in your own life. Start by updating your CV and professional profile. Even if you don't send it out immediately, having it ready can reduce feelings of helplessness. Explore potential job opportunities in your field or related areas, just to see what's out there. This proactive approach, even if it's just research, can help you feel more prepared and less at the mercy of circumstances.

Many people in Pakistan worry about "log kya kahenge" (what will people say) if they share their difficulties, especially financial ones. But remember, seeking support is a sign of strength. Consider talking openly and honestly with your wife or another trusted family member about your fears. You don't have to carry this burden alone. Sharing your worries can lighten the load and might even bring new ideas or emotional support you hadn't considered.

Nighttime can often make worries feel bigger because there are fewer distractions. Try establishing a calming routine before bed. This could include avoiding news or work discussions for an hour or two before sleeping, reading a light book, or listening to soothing music. Some people find it helpful to write down their worries in a journal before bed, getting them out of their head and onto paper, so they don't keep circling in their mind.

Remember, your worth as a person and as a family man is not defined solely by your job. You are doing your best in a very difficult situation. Be kind to yourself through this period. Even small acts of self-care, like taking a short walk or spending time with your children, can provide moments of relief and help you maintain your strength.

This is a challenging time, Imran, but by taking small, practical steps to manage your anxiety and seeking support from those you trust, you can navigate these fears. Focus on what you can control, and allow yourself compassion for what you cannot.
