Managing Stress When Applying for a Visa Abroad

Answered 4 April 2025 at 4:00 pm PKT

It sounds like you're carrying a heavy burden right now, Noreen, and it's completely understandable to feel overwhelmed by the visa process and the thought of moving abroad. Many people in Pakistan feel this immense pressure when pursuing higher studies internationally, especially with family hopes riding on them.

I am preparing to move abroad for higher studies, but the visa application process is incredibly stressful. My family has invested so much, and the pressure to succeed is immense. I'm constantly anxious about whether I'll get the visa and adjust to a new country.

The journey you're on is incredibly challenging, from navigating complex paperwork to managing the high expectations of your family and the uncertainty of a new country. It's normal to feel constant anxiety when so much is at stake. Acknowledge that these feelings are valid and a natural response to such a high-pressure situation.

Try to break down the visa application process into tiny, manageable steps. Instead of thinking about the entire mountain, focus only on the very next document you need or the next form to fill. Dedicate a specific, short amount of time each day to these tasks, then step away. This can make the process feel less daunting and give you a sense of accomplishment with each small win.

Regarding family pressure, remember that their investment and hopes often come from a place of deep love and wanting the best for you. However, this can feel like a huge weight. It might help to have an honest but gentle conversation with a trusted family member, explaining that while you appreciate their support, the pressure is affecting your stress levels. Reassure them you are doing your best, but also remind yourself that your worth is not solely tied to this outcome.

Prioritize small moments of calm in your day. This doesn't require money or special equipment. Take five deep breaths when you feel anxiety rising, go for a short walk outside to clear your head, or listen to calming music for 10-15 minutes. Even small breaks can help reset your mind and reduce the feeling of being constantly on edge.

Connect with others who have gone through a similar experience, if you can. Look for online forums or social media groups for Pakistani students who have successfully moved to your target country. Hearing their stories or getting practical advice on adjustment and cultural differences can demystify the unknown and make the idea of moving feel less scary. Just make sure these connections are supportive and don't add to your worries.

Finally, allow yourself to imagine scenarios beyond just success or failure. What if the visa takes longer than expected? What if adjustment is harder than you think? By briefly considering these 'what ifs' and thinking about a simple next step for each, you can reduce the paralyzing fear of the unknown. This isn't about dwelling on negatives, but about feeling more prepared for different paths life might take, reminding you that you are resilient and can adapt.
