Unmarried at 30: Dealing with Pressure and Anxiety

Answered 27 January 2026 at 5:51 pm PKT

It's completely normal to feel overwhelmed and anxious when facing constant pressure about marriage, especially in our society. This feeling of 'running out of time' can be incredibly stressful, and we want to help you navigate these emotions.

I'm 30 and still unmarried. Everyone keeps telling me I'm too old now and it feels like I'm running out of time. I feel so much anxiety about my future.

Mehwish, it sounds incredibly tough to hear those comments and feel that rush of anxiety about your future. You are definitely not alone in feeling this way; many women in Pakistan face immense pressure about marriage, especially as they reach their late twenties and early thirties.

It's easy to internalise these messages and feel like there's a strict timeline for life, but please know that your worth isn't tied to your marital status or any age. Life paths are unique, and a fulfilling life doesn't follow one single script, no matter what 'log kya kahenge' (what will people say).

When people make comments, it's okay to have a few simple, polite responses ready to protect your peace. You could gently say, 'Allah will bless me when the time is right,' or 'I'm focusing on my present and my goals right now.' Sometimes, just changing the subject or gently walking away can also help.

For the anxiety you feel inside, try simple breathing exercises when you feel overwhelmed. Inhale slowly through your nose for four counts, hold your breath for four, and then exhale slowly through your mouth for six counts. Repeating this a few times can help calm your nervous system.

Also, think about what brings you joy and purpose outside of marriage. Is there a skill you want to learn, a hobby you enjoy, or a cause you care about? Investing time in yourself, your friendships, and your personal growth can build confidence and remind you of your many strengths and achievements.

It can also be helpful to confide in one trusted person – a friend, a cousin, or an aunt – who truly understands and supports you without judgment. Sharing your feelings can lighten the burden and remind you that you have allies in your corner.

Remember, Mehwish, your life is valuable and complete as it is, and you deserve peace and happiness regardless of your marital status. Focus on what you can control, nurture yourself, and trust that your path will unfold as it's meant to.
