When Family Hurts: Coping with Constant Criticism

Answered 1 November 2026 at 10:41 pm PKT

This page is for those who feel broken after giving their all to family and receiving only criticism. It offers practical ways to handle the pain and find emotional relief.

I gave everything to my family - my time, my respect, my whole self - but all I got back was criticism. Now I feel like my heart is breaking into pieces, and I don't know what to do. I want to scream until my lungs burst because my head is so heavy with sadness, and every word now shatters my heart.

Aap have given so much, and it is heartbreaking to feel that it was not enough. That is genuinely hard, and it is okay to feel this pain. You are not alone in this.

This is not your fault

Family is supposed to be a source of love and support, but sometimes it can feel like the opposite. It is not your fault that they have treated you this way. You deserve respect and kindness, just like anyone else. Many people feel this way, and it does not mean there is anything wrong with you.

Give yourself space to feel

It is okay to feel this sadness. Do not try to push it away or pretend it is not there. Let yourself feel it, and know that it will not last forever. You can try writing down your feelings in a journal, or talking to someone you trust. Sometimes, just expressing what you are going through can make it feel a little lighter.

Take care of yourself

You have given so much to your family, and now it is time to take care of yourself. Do one thing every day that brings you joy or comfort, even if it is just for a few minutes. This could be reading, listening to music, or going for a walk. It is also important to look after your physical health. Try to eat well, stay hydrated, and get enough sleep. Your body and mind are connected, and taking care of one will help the other.

Remember, you are not alone in this. Many people feel this way, and it is okay to ask for help. You deserve to be happy and at peace, and it is never too late to start taking care of yourself.
