Feeling Like You Disappointed Your Parents After An Exam

Answered 15 March 2026 at 11:33 am PKT

It sounds like you're carrying a heavy burden right now, Zara. Feeling like you've let your parents down after a big exam is incredibly tough, and it's completely normal to feel overwhelmed by that kind of pressure.

My medical entry test score wasn't good and my parents are very upset. I feel like I've disappointed them. Is this kind of exam stress difficult to handle?

The pressure around exams like the medical entry test in Pakistan is immense. It's not just about your score; it often feels like it's about family honour, your future, and what 'log kya kahenge'. When the results don't meet everyone's hopes, the feeling of disappointment, both your own and what you perceive from your parents, can be truly heartbreaking and difficult to manage.

It’s important to remember that your worth as a person is not defined by an exam score. You are more than a number on a paper. This feeling of having let people down is very real and painful, but it's a feeling, not the complete truth about who you are or what you're capable of.

When things have calmed down a little, try to have an open conversation with your parents. Find a time when you can all talk without immediate anger or frustration. Express how you feel – your disappointment, your sadness, and your fears for the future. Listen to their concerns too, and try to understand their perspective. Sometimes, parents express their worry as anger because they want the best for you.

Take some time to process your own feelings. It's okay to grieve the outcome you hoped for. Instead of dwelling on what went wrong, gently shift your focus to what you can do next. Are there other paths you can explore? Are there other fields that interest you? Many successful and happy people found their way through unexpected routes.

Connect with friends who understand. Chances are, many of your peers are going through similar feelings of stress and uncertainty after exams. Sharing your worries can help you feel less alone and might even spark new ideas for your future. Just talking about it can lift some of the weight.

Remember to be kind to yourself during this time. Take short breaks, do something you enjoy, even if it's just listening to music or going for a walk. Your emotional well-being matters, and looking after yourself now will help you think more clearly about your next steps.

There are many different paths to a fulfilling life and career. This one exam result does not close all doors forever. Give yourself space to breathe, talk through your feelings, and explore what truly resonates with you for your future.
