Working Women in Pakistan: Managing Guilt & Family Pressure

Answered 7 September 2026 at 7:41 pm PKT

Many working women in Pakistan face unique challenges balancing career demands with family expectations and societal pressures. This page offers strategies to manage guilt, navigate criticism, and prioritize your mental well-being.

I work a full time job because we need the income, but relatives keep hinting that a good woman would be at home with her children. I come back exhausted and then feel guilty all evening. The guilt is heavier than the work itself. How do I stop carrying Please advise.it?

Yeh sach mein mushkil hai, aur aap akeli nahin hain jo yeh sab mehsoos karti hain. Many women in Pakistan work hard to support their families and face similar comments and the heavy burden of guilt. It's truly exhausting to come home after a long day and then carry that emotional weight.

The guilt you feel is not because you are doing something wrong. It comes from the expectations of others, and from a traditional mindset that doesn't always reflect the realities of modern life or the needs of a family. You are working because your family needs the income, and that is a significant contribution. You are providing for your children, which is a powerful act of love and responsibility.

Understanding Your Value

Remember that providing for your family, whether financially or by managing the home, is equally valuable. Your work outside the home is directly helping to secure your family's future and well-being. This is a strength, not a weakness. Your children will see a mother who is strong, dedicated, and capable, which is an incredible example for them. Don't let others' opinions diminish the real impact you are making.

Handling Comments from Relatives

It can be hard to deal with relatives, especially when you want to maintain good rishtas. One thing you can do is to have a few polite, firm responses ready. You don't need to justify yourself endlessly.

  • You could say, "Hum sab mil kar ghar chala rahe hain, aur yeh zaroori hai" (We are all running the home together, and this is necessary).
  • Or, "Allah ka shukar hai ke mein kaam kar sakti hoon aur apne bachchon ke liye behtar mustaqbil bana sakti hoon" (Thank God I can work and build a better future for my children).
  • Sometimes, a simple smile and changing the subject can also work. "Achha, aap ne aaj kya kiya?" (So, what did you do today?)

Do one thing — focus on what truly matters to you and your immediate family. Your children need a mother who is present and caring, whether she works outside the home or not. Quality time, even if it's less frequent, is often more important than the quantity of time. Let go of the need to please everyone else. Your peace of mind is important too.
