When You Feel Empty Inside: Private Ways to Find Peace

Answered 29 March 2026 at 9:56 am PKT

Shaista, it's completely understandable to feel like you're not okay inside, and to worry about what others might say. Many women in Pakistan share these feelings, and there are gentle, private ways you can start to feel better.

Mujhe lagta hai main theek nahi hoon, andar se bohat empty feel karti hoon. Lekin main nahi chahti ke kisi ko pata chale, log kya kahenge? Iska koi secret tareeqa hai?

Feeling an emptiness inside is a very real and often heavy experience, and you are not alone in feeling this way. It's not a sign of weakness, and it's certainly not your fault. The concern about 'log kya kahenge' (what will people say) is also a genuine fear for many of us, making it even harder to talk about what you're going through. Your feelings are valid, and there are quiet steps you can take for yourself.

One very private way to process your feelings is through journaling. Find a small notebook that you can keep hidden, or even use a notes app on your phone that you can password-protect or delete entries from later. Write down whatever comes to mind – your thoughts, your worries, the things you wish you could say. You don't need to censor yourself because no one else will read it; this is just for you to get things out of your head.

Try incorporating small, sensory acts of self-care into your day that won't draw attention. This could be enjoying a quiet cup of chai or coffee alone, really focusing on its warmth and flavour. You could put on headphones and listen to a soothing recitation of the Quran, some calming nature sounds, or soft music for just a few minutes when you have a moment of privacy. These small breaks can create a sense of calm.

Gentle movement and breathing can also be done discreetly. When you're alone in your room, try some simple stretches – reaching your arms up, gently touching your toes, or rolling your shoulders. You can also practice deep breathing: slowly breathe in through your nose for a count of four, hold for four, and exhale slowly through your mouth for a count of six. This can be done anywhere, anytime, to help ground you.

Look for small, personal ways to create a sense of purpose or accomplishment that only you know about. This could be tending to a small plant, learning a new simple recipe, reading a few pages of a book you enjoy, or quietly trying to learn a new skill online. These little achievements, even if nobody else sees them, can slowly help fill that empty space with a sense of quiet satisfaction.

Be incredibly kind and patient with yourself as you try these things. Healing is a journey, not a race. Each small, secret step you take to nurture your inner self is a powerful act of self-care. It's about finding small moments of peace and connection within yourself, one quiet moment at a time.
