When You Miss Home While Studying Abroad

Answered 5 April 2026 at 1:19 pm PKT

Feeling homesick when you're far away from your family and culture is a very common and natural experience, Yasmin. It shows how much you cherish your roots, and it's certainly not a sign of weakness.

I'm living abroad for my studies and feel incredibly homesick all the time. I miss my family, my culture, everything. How do people cope with being so far away?

Many Pakistani women like you, studying abroad, go through intense feelings of longing for home, their family, and the familiar sights and sounds of Pakistan. It's completely normal to feel this way when you're navigating a new environment, especially one that might feel very different from what you're used to.

First, make sure to connect with your family regularly. Schedule video calls or voice notes where you can share small, everyday details. This helps you feel part of their lives and them part of yours, bridging the distance and making you feel less alone.

Bring a piece of Pakistan into your new home. Cook your favourite Pakistani dishes, listen to Pakistani music, or watch a drama online. Look for Pakistani student groups or communities in your area; sometimes just speaking Urdu with someone or sharing a meal can offer immense comfort.

While cherishing your home culture, gently try to explore your new surroundings as well. Visit a local park, try a new cafe, or simply take a walk and observe. These small new experiences aren't about forgetting home, but about gradually building positive memories in your current location, which can help create a new sense of belonging.

Establishing a routine can be very grounding. Try to maintain regular sleep patterns, eat healthy meals, and schedule time for your studies and some relaxation. Simple acts of self-care, like a warm cup of chai or reading a good book, can also provide comfort during challenging moments.

It also helps to express your feelings. You could try journaling, writing down everything you're feeling without judgment. Sometimes, just seeing your thoughts on paper can help you process them and feel a little lighter.

Remember that adjusting takes time, and homesickness often comes in waves. Be patient and kind to yourself during this journey. You are incredibly strong for pursuing your education so far from home, and these feelings are just a part of that brave adventure.
