Feeling Unreal? Understanding Depersonalization and Disconnection

Answered 31 October 2026 at 3:49 am PKT

Many people experience moments where they feel detached from themselves or their surroundings, especially when alone or at night. This page explains what it means to feel unreal or nonexistent and offers guidance on understanding these experiences.

I feel like I'm not real, or that I don't exist, especially at night or when I'm alone. Even when I'm traveling, I sometimes feel disconnected and can't answer people when they ask me questions.

Aap are describing something very real, even though it doesn't feel that way to aap right now. This experience is called depersonalization, and it's more common than many people realize. It's like your mind is trying to protect you from feeling too much, and it does that by making you feel distant from everything, even yourself. The night time and alone time can make it feel worse, but it's not your fault and it will pass.

What might be happening

  • Your mind is overloaded: Sometimes when we feel too much stress, anxiety, or sadness, our brains create distance to help us cope. It's like a safety mechanism, even though it doesn't feel safe in the moment.
  • You're exhausted: Lack of sleep or rest can make these feelings worse. It can make everything feel unreal or distant.

What might help

  • Grounding techniques: These help bring you back to the present moment. Try the 5-4-3-2-1 method: name 5 things you can see, 4 things you can touch, 3 things you can hear, 2 things you can smell, and 1 thing you can taste.
  • Talk it out: Share what you're feeling with someone you trust. It might feel scary, but it can help you feel more connected to yourself and others.
  • Self-care: Make sure you're getting enough sleep, eating well, and taking time for yourself. Even small acts of kindness towards yourself can make a big difference.
