How to Cope With Work Exhaustion, Self-Doubt and Overthinking

Answered 17 September 2026 at 12:32 am PKT

If work leaves you drained and your thoughts keep racing with self-doubt, you are not alone. This page explains how to recognise stress or burnout, calm an overactive mind after work, and create a realistic plan for moving forward.

I feel exhausted after work, and my mind keeps going into overdrive with self-doubt. I feel like time is slipping away and I’m not doing enough—how can I calm down and manage this?

Work can leave your body and mind switched on at the same time, so exhaustion and self-doubt often feed each other. You are not doing “nothing”; your brain is trying to solve everything when you have the least energy left.

When work ends, take ten minutes for a proper handover to tomorrow. Write down every unfinished task or worry, then choose only three priorities for the next day. Add a short “done list” too, because tired minds notice what remains and forget what was completed.

If thoughts start racing, put both feet on the floor, breathe out slowly, and ask: “Can I do something useful about this tonight?” If yes, take one small ten-minute step. If no, tell yourself, “This is scheduled for tomorrow,” and return to something restful without trying to win an argument with your thoughts.

If this pattern continues for several weeks or starts affecting sleep, appetite, or daily work, talking with a mental-health professional can help. The aim is not to finish everything today; it is to give your mind a clear place to stop.
