Losing Your Job and Facing Debt: How to Talk to Family

Answered 7 May 2026 at 1:40 pm PKT

Losing your job and dealing with debt is an incredibly heavy burden, and it's completely natural to feel overwhelmed and depressed right now. Many people in Pakistan face similar challenges, and you are not alone in feeling this way.

Meri job chali gayi hai aur ghar ke kharche hain. Karz bhi hai aur financial halat bohat kharab hai. Bohat depressed feel kar raha hun. Family ko kaise bataun?

The stress of job loss, household expenses, and debt can feel crushing, and it's understandable that you're feeling down. This is a tough situation, and your feelings of depression are a normal reaction to such immense pressure and uncertainty. Please know that this is not your fault, and these feelings don't make you any less capable.

The thought of telling your family can be daunting. You might worry about their reaction, how it will affect them, or what others might say. This fear is very real, but sharing what you're going through can actually be the first step towards finding solutions and easing your burden. Your family's support can be a powerful source of strength.

When you're ready, choose a calm moment to speak with your family, perhaps starting with the person you trust most, like your wife or a close sibling. Explain the situation clearly, but also share your feelings honestly – say you're worried, feeling lost, or depressed. Frame it not as a confession, but as a challenge the family needs to face together, as a team.

Together, you can start looking at practical steps. Begin by reviewing household expenses to see where small cuts can be made, even temporarily. Brainstorm ideas for new income streams, whether it's temporary work, using existing skills for freelancing, or exploring new opportunities. Many people in Pakistan turn to their community or trusted friends for job leads, which can also be an option.

Regarding debt, it's a stressful situation, but facing it head-on with your family can help. Prioritise which debts are most urgent and consider if it's possible to talk to creditors about a temporary payment plan. Remember, this is a temporary phase, and finding solutions together will strengthen your family.

Amidst all this, please be kind to yourself. Even small steps like maintaining a daily routine, taking a short walk, or talking to a trusted friend can help lift your spirits. You're going through a lot, but by facing this with your family, you're taking brave steps towards a better future.
