Depression: questions answered

Answered 22 October 2026 at 9:36 pm PKT

I feel numb and stuck. Doing the opposite of what I feel like doing helps, but I can't keep up that speed all day. Can you give me a simple, practical daily routine to make that choice without burning out?

It makes sense that you can't keep that speed up all day — doing the opposite of what you feel is exhausting if you try to do it every moment. The trick is to pick a few small, timed moments where you deliberately act against the numbness, and let the rest of the day be gentle. Here is a simple routine that might help.

Three anchor points in your day

  • Morning (within 10 minutes of waking): Do one thing that breaks the inertia — splash cold water on your face, open the window, or step outside for two minutes. That's it. Don't try to start the whole day.
  • Midday (around lunch): Eat something, even if you don't feel hungry. Then do a single opposite action: walk to the kitchen or stand up and stretch for 30 seconds. The point is to interrupt the stuck feeling once, not to fix it.
  • Evening (before you settle for the night): Complete one tiny task that leaves a visible result — make your bed, wash three dishes, or fold one piece of clothing. It creates a small sense of "I did something" without needing willpower.

Between these anchor points, give yourself full permission to rest, scroll, or do nothing. The goal is not to be productive all day — it's to keep the numbness from turning into complete paralysis. You're already doing the hard part by noticing what helps. Now you just need to pace it.
