Feeling Numb and Disconnected: Is It Depression or Excuses?

Answered 22 October 2026 at 2:57 pm PKT

If you feel numb, disconnected, and struggle to do things you once did easily, you may wonder if you're making excuses or if something deeper is wrong. This page explores how emotional numbness and lack of motivation are common symptoms of depression, and offers guidance on understanding and addressing them.

I feel numb and disconnected, like I'm not fully myself. I'm struggling to do things I used to do easily, like getting up on time or not using my phone before bed. Am I just making excuses, or is this numbness making it harder to stick to my own standards?

It is not an excuse - it is a symptom. Numbness and disconnection are what happen when your mind and body are running on empty. The part of you that used to wake up on time and put the phone down is fuelled by a certain kind of energy, and when that energy is gone, those habits fall apart on their own. That is why this is so frustrating: you know exactly what you want to do, but the doing feels impossible.

You are not lazy. Asking yourself to stick to your old standards while feeling this way is like asking a person with a broken leg to run a race just because they used to be fast. The connection between what you want and what you can do is genuinely interrupted right now. That is hard, and it deserves patience, not blame.

Tiny steps beat big promises

When everything feels heavy, the fix is never to try harder at the big things. It is to shrink the goal until it feels almost silly.

  • Set the alarm for twenty minutes later than your old target, and just meet that for a week.
  • Put your phone in another room twenty minutes before bed, and simply leave it there.
  • Stand in the morning sun for one minute after waking, with no task attached to it.

Those are not "real" progress on their own, but they are proof to your brain that action is still possible. Each tiny win rebuilds a little bit of the connection you are missing. And if you miss a day, do not turn it into a verdict on yourself - just do it the next day.

Give yourself a few weeks of these small goals. Numbness usually lifts as the mind recovers from stress, burnout, or simply carrying too much for too long. Until then, treat yourself with the same patience you would give a friend who is unwell, because that is exactly what you are. The standards can wait; you cannot.
